Citicoline - What Is It And What Are The Benefits?

Citicoline At a Glance

Citicoline was initially developed in Japan to help combat the effects of stroke. In Japan and Europe, people use this chemical to improve brain function, thinking, and memory in those who recently suffered a stroke.

Dosage

In adults and adolescents, oral dosages of 250 - 2,000 mg daily have been trialed and studied. In patients with severe depression, lower doses of 100mg twice daily have been studied over the short-term, six weeks.

For declines in thinking and memory skills related to age, 1,000-2,000mg is given daily by mouth. Those who’ve suffered a stroke in the last 24 hours take 500-2,000mg daily. Lastly, in glaucoma cases, the eye disorder that causes vision loss, patients take 500-1,600mg of citicoline per day.

As an injection, citicoline is combined with sodium and prepared from 1,125-11,375g of the solution. This is combined with 5-15g of activated carbon and 10,000ml of water.

Citicoline does not interact with other drugs. The effects of taking it by mouth for longer than 90 days are not yet studied, and it should only be injected by a licensed healthcare professional.

Sufficient Evidence For…

  • Stroke. Patients whose stroke was caused by a clot may be more likely to make a full recovery within three months by taking citicoline. The chemical should be given within 24-hours of the stroke, and it can be given by mouth or IV.
  • Age-related decline in cognition. This includes thinking skills and memory, and citicoline is observed to improve these declines in those aged 50-85 years.
  • Glaucoma. This is an eye disorder that results in vision loss. Citicoline may improve people’s vision when given as a shot, IV, or by mouth.
  • Blood circulation problems in the brain. Injections or oral doses of citicoline may improve behavior and memory in those suffering from long-term brain circulation problems.

Researches Are Still Studying…

  • Schizophrenia. Those with schizophrenia suffer from two types of symptoms: positive and negative. Positive signs are where a symptom that was not there before occurs, and negative symptoms are where normal functioning behaviors are no longer present. Citicoline may help improve negative symptoms, including challenges feeling pleasure, expressing emotions, and more. It doesn’t seem to help with positive signs, such as hallucinations.
  • Bipolar disorder. Early research indicates citicoline is ineffective for improving manic or depressive symptoms for those with bipolar.
  • Alzheimer’s disease. Citicoline might improve memory, learning, and information processing in those with less severe cases of Alzheimer’s.
  • Ischemic optic neuropathy. This occurs when there’s a blockage of the optic nerve, leading to vision loss. Taking citicoline orally for 60-days may improve vision, but research is still in the early stages.
  • Depression. Oral doses of citicoline combined with citalopram, an antidepressant, may improve depression better than the antidepressant on its own.
  • Parkinson’s disease. Citicoline may help with Parkinson’s symptoms (not including tremors) when taken orally or as a shot.
  • Cocaine addiction. For those suffering from bipolar or cocaine use disorder, citicoline may help them reduce their cocaine use.
  • Neurological trauma. This includes injuries to the spine, nerves, or brain. Some research indicates that citicoline may decrease brain death and help improve speaking, memory, and learning in patients who’ve suffered brain trauma.
  • Intracranial hemorrhage. This refers to bleeding in the skull. Citicoline may help those who are recovering from internal skull bleeding when it comes to increasing their strength.
  • Lazy eye. Those who take citicoline orally for up to one year or are given a citicoline shot for 15-days may help improve vision in those with a lazy eye.

Side Effects

Orally. Most people who take citicoline by mouth do not suffer side effects. It’s uncertain whether taking citicoline orally for more than 90-days is safe. Some people do encounter the following side effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Insomnia
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Blurred vision

Few notable side effects appear when people receive citicoline intravenously.

Shot. As with injection, there are few notable side effects when given citicoline as a shot.
